I love lists. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been making a list of things I need to do, things to pack when going on holiday, list of books I want to read. My need for a list is almost fanatical. Recently, I’ve been reading about how you should embrace life as it comes and be open to change or ‘life’ as it is rather than make an endless, neatly typed up, two pages long lists of things to do. For a while I tried a list less few days which did seem a little liberating but I kept forgetting things and would then panic at the last minute trying to finish and get things done. So here is a list of the good points and the bad points of having a list:
The good points of a list:
1. You know the things that you need to do.
2. You have a sense of achievement when there are more ticks on the list.
3. It helps you remember important things you need to do.
4. You feel like you’ve had a productive day when you tick off things on the list.
5. You remember what you did on that day when you feel like the day has gone by in a blur or your husbands comes home and says he’s been working all day.
6. It helps you plan your time.
The bad points of having a list:
1. If you can’t tick off things on the list if something else comes up, it can be demoralising.
2. You can get carried away with making a list and have so much to do but not enough time to do it.
3. You can become a slave to your list and might not be so productive, especially when it comes to the bigger picture or following your big life goals as you get caught up in the little things to do.
4. The list becomes so long that you can’t be bothered to look at it and you may as well not have a list.
5. It can be liberating not having a list, almost like a holiday!
6. There must be more to life than following a list!
These are my good and bad points of having a list. I’m sure there are lots more and I would love you to add to it. I still haven’t found a happy medium between having a list and not having a list but having a holiday from it seems to be a good idea, especially if you can come back to it with a fresh pair of eyes and delete the things that aren’t important. For now, I’m just carrying on through my list of things to do today.
